Information blocking is the prevention or material discouragement of the access, exchange, or use of electronic health information and was part of the 21st Century Cures Act, which was passed in December 2016. The ONC issued a final rule on May 1, 2020, which go into effect on April 5, 2021. The Information Blocking Final Rule applies to all healthcare providers.
